Faculty of Psychology

Academic Briefing for New Students 2025

What is Psychology?

Psychology is a Science: It stands on scientific pillars. Every theory, intervention, and conclusion we draw must be based on the scientific method, observation, and empirical data, not just on feeling or speculation.

Psychology is an Art: This discipline requires empathy, intuition, and the ability to build deep relationships (rapport) with people. Science without art becomes rigid and inapplicable.

Psychology is for Humanity: Our ultimate goal is to improve human quality of life (well-being), alleviate psychological suffering, and help individuals reach their fullest potential.

So, you will learn to become someone who is both scientifically intelligent and wise in human interactions.

The curriculum at the UIR Faculty of Psychology is designed to equip you with 4 competency pillars:

1. Theoretical Competence (Knowledge):
You will study the various schools of psychology, from Psychoanalysis, Behaviorism, and Cognitive psychology to Humanistic and Indigenous (Local) Psychology. You will become familiar with names like Freud, Skinner, Bandura, and Maslow.

2. Methodological Competence (Skills):
You will be trained to become a skilled researcher. This includes developing research proposals, mastering data collection techniques (observation, interviews, questionnaires), and analyzing data using statistics and software like SPSS. This is the lifeblood of psychological science.

3. Practical Competence (Application):
Through laboratory work and Internships (Fieldwork Practice), you will directly apply theory. You will learn to conduct psychological assessments, prepare psychological reports, and the basics of intervention (counseling, training).

4. Ethical Competence (Attitude):
This is the most crucial. You will be introduced to the Indonesian Code of Ethics for Psychology. Client confidentiality, the principle of non-maleficence (do no harm), and integrity are non-negotiable absolutes.

Choosing psychology is not like choosing an ordinary major. You are choosing a vocation.

You will learn about psychological wounds, resilient strength, the beauty of human diversity, and the complexity of the mind.

There will be days when you feel overwhelmed by theory, frustrated with research data, or even shaken upon recognizing a portrait of yourself in a theory. All of this is part of the process of becoming a resilient professional.

Believe that all your efforts will be deeply meaningful. One day, you will be the person trusted to hear someone’s most secret stories, help a child discover their talents, restore the spirit of a stressed employee, or give a voice to the marginalized.

Begin with sincere intention, pursue the process with discipline, and enjoy every second of your academic adventure.

The UIR Faculty of Psychology is here to support your dreams. We aim not only to produce graduates but to cultivate future leaders who can make tangible contributions to society.
